The incident took place around 6:20 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, at the I-95 exit ramp in Stamford.
The collision occurred when a 2015 Chevy, being driven by Alec Ward, a 26-year-old Shelton resident, was exiting southbound I-95 at Exit 9, said Sgt. Jeffrey Booth, of the Stamford Police.
The vehicle was at the top of the ramp and made a right turn onto East Main Street as the vehicle was making the turn it struck Elena Laos, age 68, of Stamford, who was crossing the exit ramp walking westbound on East Main Street, Booth said.
Laos suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision and was admitted to Stamford Hospital in critical condition. Late Wednesday, Laos died at Stamford Hospital, Booth said.
An initial investigation indicates that Laos was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision, he added.
"Neither excessive speed nor intoxication is being considered a factor in this collision," Booth said. "Ward stayed on the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation."
This investigation is active and ongoing, he added.
The department is requesting that anyone who witnessed the collision or may have any other information call 203-977-4712.
